Hallstatt, the lakeside village in the Salzkammergut, is one of the most photographed places in Austria and one of the hardest to reach by public transport from Prague. It is about 370 km away and the last stretch is a regional train plus a ferry across the lake, or a mountain road. There is no direct connection. The usual route is a Railjet to Linz, a regional train to Attnang-Puchheim, another to Hallstatt station on the far side of the lake, and the ferry across to the village. Count 6 to 7 hours and check the ferry times against the last train, especially in winter.
Is a day trip from Prague to Hallstatt realistic?
By car, yes, if you accept about 8 hours on the road: leave Prague at 7:00, arrive around 11:00, spend 3 to 4 hours in the village and at the salt mine or the skywalk, and be back in Prague by 20:00. By train, no. Most visitors are happier with one night in Hallstatt or Salzburg, which also lets you see the village early in the morning before the day-trip crowds arrive.
